What we do

Rights in Action is a non-profit, charitable organisation that provides free independent advocacy support for people with disabilities who meet eligibility criteria and are experiencing neglect, abuse, exploitation, harm OR have been discriminated against OR their human rights or freedoms have been contravened. Rights in Action supports people with disability when the individual has been assessed appropriately by our Intake Coordinator; so, if someone has been taken advantage of or their rights have been infringed upon because of their disability, please get their permission before contacting us, as without the person’s (with disability) knowledge or consent, Rights In Action can only provide general advice in the first instance.

Rights In Action’s Intake Coordinator and Advocates are able to provide free advice, information and referrals over the phone to those who may not meet eligibility criteria or the issue is assessed as being outside the scope of advocacy.
RIA’s professional staff are skilled with technical knowledge across all our programs; so if you would like to receive a 30min free telephone consultation on matters such as NDIS External Appeals or Internal Reviews, QCAT enquiries, general complaints process or wish to obtain further information, please call and discuss your concerns with us.

Rights In Action are completely on the side of the person with a disability and will support them where needed. We also promote and provide strategies or advice to those individuals who have capacity to speak up for themselves – this is called Self-Advocacy.

Rights in Action provides general advocacy assistance to people with disabilities who live in Cairns, Yarrabah, Mareeba and Atherton;. We also provide advocacy supports to NDIS participants seeking an internal review or External Appeal with the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) if they are unhappy with their plan and have already been unsuccessful in an S100 (review of a reviewable decision) or S48 Change of Circumstances review.

Rights In Action Incorporated is an independent advocacy agency for people with a disability, and part of the National Disability Advocacy Program funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services, and the State Government Department of Seniors, Disability Services Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Queensland Health.
